Zambia is located in sub-Saharan Africa. It is a landlocked country slightly larger than the state of Texas. The population is about 12 million with the capital city of Lusaka being about 2 million people.
Family Legacy has been called to work exclusively with the country of Zambia and specifically with the orphaned and vulnerable children who live there. The reason we started working in Zambia is because our President and Founder, Greer Kendall, was born in Zambia. There are 12 million people in Zambia and half of them are under the age of 16. That means half of the country is children. This huge number is due to the high death rate from extreme poverty and HIV/AIDS. Of the 6 million children in Zambia, more than 1 million of them are orphaned.
Think about all of the people you know over the age of 40. Now imagine a country where the oldest person you know is 40. The average life expectancy in Zambia is 38 years old. This is due to Zambia having the 5th highest death rate in the world.
About 86% of the population of Zambia lives on less than $1 a day, and with 70% unemployment, finding a dollar is not very easy.
